Future and FCS II fin boxes are two of the most popular fin systems used in surfboards. While they share some similarities, they have some significant differences that are important to consider.
FCS II fin boxes, on the other hand, use a keyless design that eliminates the need for a screw and plug. The fins are held in place by a set of springs and a locking mechanism. This keyless design also allows for quick and easy fin changes.
Future fin boxes are a well-established system that uses a screw and plug to secure the fins in place. This system is simple and reliable, and it is compatible with a wide range of fins. The screw and plug design is easy to install and remove, allowing surfers to switch out fins as needed.
FCS II and Future fins are not compatible with each other's fin boxes. So going with either option really puts you in their ecosystem, and this is only compounded once you buy your first 5 fin set.
For the weight snobs out there, shout out to our cycling buddies, FCS II in a 5 fin set up could save you a couple ounces compared to a Future setup.
In conclusion, both Future and FCS II fin boxes are reliable and well-designed systems. The main difference between the two is their design and compatibility with different types of fins. When choosing between the two, consider your fin preferences, budget, and the performance you are looking for.
Here is a short video from our friends at “Continue Surfboards” that do some non-scientific tests on the FCS II and Future fin boxes:
